Eastpointe Man Charged Attempted Assault on Sterling Heights Officer

Joshua Mills, a 32-year-old from Eastpointe, has been charged after allegedly attempting to stab a Sterling Heights police officer with a screwdriver during a shoplifting arrest at a Walmart on October 5. Police responded to a shoplifting report, and when officers arrived, Mills fled, prompting a pursuit where a Taser was deployed. While on the ground and being arrested, Mills reportedly sat up and tried to stab the officer in the face, narrowly missing. Mills faces multiple charges including assault with intent to do great bodily harm, resisting or assaulting a police officer, and second-degree retail fraud, with bond set at $500,000. He waived his preliminary exam and was bound over to circuit court, with an arraignment scheduled for November 10, and has requested a criminal responsibility assessment to evaluate his mental competency.
