GPS Disruptions Hit Baltic, Poland, NATO Citing Russian Interference
Poland and neighboring Baltic countries are experiencing persistent GPS signal disruptions over the Baltic Sea, which Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and Lithuanian officials attribute to deliberate Russian sabotage activities. These GPS interferences have affected navigation for private drones, commercial flights, and maritime operations, prompting rerouted flights and raising serious regional security concerns. Despite Russia's denials, NATO allies including Estonia, Finland, and others have reported similar incidents, with accusations that Russia's Kaliningrad exclave serves as a base for these electronic interferences. Lithuanian Transport Minister Eugenijus Sabutis warned that such disruptions are unlikely to end with the Ukraine war, emphasizing that these electronic warfare tactics have a longer history predating the current conflict. Lithuania and 12 other EU countries have formally appealed to the European Commission to address what they describe as a coordinated campaign by Russia and Belarus to destabilize regional infrastructure, particularly targeting transport and communication systems. Regional leaders stress the need to adapt to this new geopolitical reality and develop strategies to mitigate ongoing and future electronic interference threats.
