Bill Gates-Linked $645M Hydrogen Superyacht Breakthrough Listed For Sale
A $645 million, 390-foot superyacht known as "Breakthrough" or "Project 821," long rumored to be linked to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is currently for sale and will be showcased at the 2025 Monaco Yacht Show. Built by Dutch shipyard Feadship over five years, the yacht is notable as the world's first superyacht powered entirely by a hydrogen fuel cell system, using compressed liquid hydrogen stored at extremely low temperatures to enable near-zero emissions cruising. Although Gates reportedly commissioned the yacht due to his interest in climate solutions, he ultimately never set foot aboard and has backed out of purchasing it. The vessel features luxurious amenities including multiple decks, bedrooms, offices, a hospital, and recreational facilities such as a basketball court and multiple libraries, blending cutting-edge environmental technology with high-end comfort. Industry experts describe "Breakthrough" as a modern engineering marvel and a milestone in sustainable maritime innovation, reflecting a shift towards greener propulsion in luxury yachts. Despite its green credentials, some critics note the irony of billionaires promoting climate awareness while still engaging in lavish travel lifestyles.
