CNN Broadcasts First Live Broadway Play Good Night, Good Luck
The Broadway adaptation of George Clooney's 2005 film "Good Night, and Good Luck" chronicles CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow's confrontation with Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 1950s Red Scare. The production, which has become the highest-grossing play in Broadway history and earned five Tony nominations, stars Clooney as Murrow and has been widely praised for its timely themes. On June 7, CNN will broadcast a live performance of the play from the Winter Garden Theatre, marking the first time a Broadway play has been televised live, with additional streaming available on HBO Max and CNN's digital platforms without cable login. The live broadcast aims to draw parallels between the McCarthy era's attacks on journalism and current challenges faced by the media under the Trump administration, highlighting the importance of journalistic courage and freedom of speech. Clooney, inspired by his father's admiration for Murrow, emphasized the significance of bringing this story to a wider audience through this historic broadcast. CNN anchors Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown will provide special coverage before and after the performance to discuss journalism's role in society today.
