Malaysian Tycoon Ong Beng Seng to Plead Guilty in Singapore Corruption Case
Singapore-based Malaysian billionaire and property tycoon Ong Beng Seng, credited with bringing Formula One to Singapore in 2008, is scheduled to plead guilty on July 3, 2025, in a high-profile corruption case involving former transport minister S. Iswaran. Ong faces two charges: abetting a public servant to obtain gifts and abetting the obstruction of justice, related to an all-expenses-paid trip to Doha in December 2022, including travel on Ong’s private jet, a stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha, and a business-class return flight. He is also accused of tipping off Iswaran that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau had seized the flight manifest, prompting attempts to retroactively bill the trip to avoid scrutiny. Ong, who has been undergoing chemotherapy for multiple myeloma, had his initial plea date delayed to allow for medical report updates, and his bail was extended to S$800,000. Iswaran was sentenced to 12 months in jail in October 2024 for related charges and completed his sentence under home detention in June 2025. Ong remains managing director of Hotel Properties Limited and has confirmed he will plead guilty to the obstruction of justice charge, with the other charge to be considered during sentencing.
