Tri-gen Facility at Port of Long Beach Wins DOE 2025 Award
The Tri-gen facility at the Port of Long Beach, a collaboration between FuelCell Energy and Toyota Motor North America, has received the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2025 Better Project Award for its innovative approach to clean energy and sustainability. This facility uses biogas from a California wastewater treatment plant to generate up to 2.3 megawatts of renewable electricity, supply 1,200 kilograms of hydrogen daily for fuel cell vehicles, and recycle approximately 1,400 gallons of water each day. By integrating these solutions, Tri-gen reduces over 9,000 tons of CO2 emissions and more than six tons of NOx emissions annually, while also providing practical, scalable benefits for Toyota’s operations at the port. Leaders from both companies highlighted the project’s ability to deliver clean energy without disrupting business models and its potential as a model for future hydrogen integration into energy systems. The recognition underscores Tri-gen's impact on improving air quality and addressing environmental challenges at the Port of Long Beach. The facility sets a new standard for sustainable industrial operations and energy independence.
