AI-Driven Crash-Proof Plane Concept Nears Testing After Fatal India Accident

News summary

Project Rebirth is an innovative AI-powered crash survival system created by engineers Eshel Wasim and Dharsan Srinivasan from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Dubai, inspired by the tragic Air India crash in June 2025 that killed 260 people. The system uses AI to monitor flight parameters such as altitude, speed, engine status, and pilot response to detect imminent crashes, automatically deploying giant airbags around the nose, belly, and tail of the aircraft below 3,000 feet to cushion impact and reduce descent speed. This protective cocoon aims to transform fatal crashes into survivable landings by absorbing energy and mitigating the violence of unplanned descents. Project Rebirth also includes impact-absorbing fluids and reverse thrust mid-air as part of its crash-proofing strategy. The project has been submitted as an entry for the prestigious James Dyson Award, which offers funding to help bring world-changing inventions to life. While still a concept, the engineers hope to test and certify the system within five years, potentially revolutionizing aviation safety.
