London, Essex c2c Rail Services Return to Public Ownership
Starting Sunday, July 20, 2025, c2c rail services operating between Fenchurch Street in London and Shoeburyness in Essex will be brought under public ownership as part of the UK Government's plan to unify rail services under Great British Railways. This transition marks c2c as the sixth operator managed by the Department for Transport Operator (DFTO), meaning about 40% of passenger journeys will be on publicly controlled trains. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized that public ownership aims to tackle systemic issues in the rail industry such as fragmentation and rising costs, while improving service coordination and reliability. c2c is known for its high customer satisfaction and reliability, with an 89% satisfaction rating and a cancellation rate below the national average, and will continue to operate with a focus on community engagement and efficiency. The creation of Great British Railways seeks to integrate track and train management, allowing passengers to switch between publicly owned operators without extra cost during disruptions, enhancing overall passenger experience. This move follows recent legislation enabling these transfers, and is part of a broader effort by the Labour government to restore public control over rail services to improve quality and accessibility.
