Domestic Violence Cases Reach Record High Across Germany in 2024

Domestic violence in Germany reached an all-time high in 2024, with over 256,900 registered victims, marking a 3.7 percent increase from the previous year. Women remain disproportionately affected, accounting for nearly 73 to 80 percent of cases, and an average of one woman is killed almost every day by a current or former partner, highlighting the severity of femicide rates. The majority of violence occurs within intimate partnerships or family relations, with both physical and psychological abuse reported. Experts suggest that the rise may be linked to social crises, personal challenges, and potentially a greater willingness to report incidents. In response, the German federal government plans to implement nationwide regulations, including the use of ankle bracelets for offenders and a new law requiring states to provide comprehensive protection and counseling services, backed by €2.6 billion in funding through 2036. A legal entitlement to free protection and counseling services is set to take effect by 2032 to better support victims.
