Clovis Man Convicted for Shooting 7-Year-Old Daughter

Jeffery Smiley, a Clovis man, was found guilty by a Curry County jury of multiple charges related to the July 2023 shooting of his 7-year-old daughter, who was critically injured but survived after emergency treatment in Lubbock, Texas. The incident occurred shortly after Smiley learned in court that his divorce was finalized and he was barred from seeing his daughter. Prosecutors presented evidence, including doorbell camera footage and eyewitness testimony, showing Smiley firing 12 rounds at his ex-wife's vehicle, which was occupied by her, her boyfriend, and three children. Smiley’s defense claimed he thought the boyfriend was shooting at him and was unaware his daughter was in the vehicle due to tinted windows. The charges include child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, child abuse without great bodily harm, felon in possession of a firearm, and shooting at a motor vehicle resulting in great bodily harm. Sentencing is scheduled for September, with Smiley facing a significant prison term.
