UK Allows Gazan Students to Bring Families Under New Visa Rules
The UK government has reversed its policy to allow Palestinian students from Gaza who are studying in the UK on scholarships to bring their partners and children with them under a student dependant visa, subject to meeting immigration requirements including proof of sufficient funds for living costs. This change comes after complaints from students who previously could not accept scholarships because they would have to leave their families behind. The government will consider applications for dependents on a case-by-case basis, supporting families of students enrolled in government-funded courses like Chevening scholarships or those pursuing research degrees. At least 75 Gazan students have been evacuated to the UK with government support, including coordination with Israeli authorities for safe passage. Students and their families have endured severe hardships due to ongoing conflict in Gaza, but the policy shift aims to help them rebuild their lives through education in UK universities. Some students who had missed the start of their courses are affected by the previous restrictions, but the new policy has brought relief to many, including those like Manar al-Houbi, who had been unable to leave Gaza without her family.
