Baker Hughes, CTR Develop 500MW Geothermal Project California
Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR) and Baker Hughes have partnered to develop a 500-megawatt geothermal power project at CTR's Hell's Kitchen site in Imperial County, California, aiming to supply reliable, low-carbon baseload energy for hyperscale data centers and AI infrastructure. This project leverages Baker Hughes' advanced high-temperature drilling technologies and digital field services, combined with CTR's development expertise, to provide a consistent power source critical for uninterrupted operations, unlike intermittent renewables such as solar and wind. The geothermal plant will also integrate battery-grade lithium chemical extraction, supporting critical mineral supply chains for U.S. auto manufacturers, and has secured agreements including a 40 MW power purchase with the Imperial Irrigation District. The development is expected to create thousands of American jobs and enhance national energy resilience, with strong support from California leadership emphasizing clean energy and economic growth. This initiative addresses the surging electricity demand driven by AI and data center expansion, positioning geothermal as a scalable and cost-effective energy solution. The project has received expedited federal permitting and is set to be one of the world's largest single geothermal power projects.
