Ukraine Parliament Expected Restore Anti-Corruption Agencies Amid Protests
Ukrainian lawmakers are set to vote on a bill restoring the independence of the country's two main anti-corruption agencies, following widespread protests against recent amendments that undermined their authority. The controversial amendments, pushed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's ruling party, had given the general prosecutor, a presidential loyalist, the power to reassign cases and prosecutors, sparking fears of political interference and protection of allies. Facing public backlash and pressure from European officials worried about Ukraine's EU membership prospects, Zelenskyy reversed course and submitted legislation to reinstate the agencies' autonomy. Thousands of protesters in Kyiv and other cities have rallied, drawing comparisons to the 2014 Maidan revolution and showing broad public support for anti-corruption efforts. The anti-corruption agencies continue their investigations, emphasizing the importance of their independence to combat entrenched graft and reinforce the rule of law amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Ukraine's top anti-corruption prosecutor expressed optimism that parliament will approve the bill, which is considered crucial for maintaining domestic trust and securing international support.
