Federal Judge Blocks Trump Ban on Harvard International Students
A federal judge, Allison Burroughs, has granted an injunction blocking President Donald Trump's administration from revoking Harvard University's certification to enroll international students, preserving the ability of about 7,000 foreign students to remain enrolled while the case proceeds. The Department of Homeland Security's May 22 decision to revoke Harvard's Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification was challenged by the university as illegal retaliation for rejecting White House demands to alter campus policies related to protests and governance. The Trump administration also attempted to block new international students from entering the U.S. to attend Harvard and has cut billions in research funding, ended federal contracts, and threatened to revoke Harvard's tax-exempt status amid accusations that it tolerates liberal bias and anti-Semitism. Harvard contends that these actions have created profound fear and confusion among its international student body and that the government's moves are part of an escalating campaign of retaliation. Judge Burroughs' rulings thus far have temporarily halted these sanctions, including orders for immigration officials to disregard the revocation and restore visa statuses. The legal battle underscores ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and Harvard regarding university autonomy and ideological control.
