DOT Revokes 13 Mexican Routes; Uber Cleared
The U.S. Department of Transportation revoked approval for 13 current and planned Mexican airline routes and barred certain services to Felipe Ángeles International Airport, targeting carriers including Aeroméxico, Volaris and Viva Aerobus after finding Mexico in repeated breach of the 2015 U.S.–Mexico Air Transport Agreement. The DOT said the action responds to years of alleged anti‑competitive behavior — including canceled U.S. carrier slots and forced relocations of cargo operations — and is also proposing a broader ban on belly cargo between Mexican airports and the U.S. that would take effect if finalized. The cancellations affect routes between Mexico City/AIFA and U.S. destinations including San Juan, Houston, McAllen and Newark; the DOT warned passengers to contact carriers about re‑accommodation and said the moves risk disrupting peak travel and tourism. Mexico’s president criticized the unilateral U.S. action and instructed diplomats to seek talks, escalating bilateral tensions over aviation policy. Separately, Mexican federal courts granted definitive suspensions preventing authorities from detaining Uber drivers at more than 70 airports — including Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and Cancún — effectively allowing ride‑hail pickups and drop‑offs while litigation continues and prompting calls for a national regulatory framework, with implementation and industry responses unresolved.
