WeRide Launches Robobus in Belgium Marking First Commercial Autonomous Deployment

WeRide has expanded its autonomous driving technology to Belgium, introducing its Robobus service in Leuven as its 11th global market. In partnership with public transit company De Lijn, the City of Leuven, and Espaces-Mobilités, the Robobus began mapping downtown Leuven with public road testing scheduled for mid-September 2025 and a pilot service planned from November through January 2026. If successful, this pilot will mark Belgium's first commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles operating in mixed urban traffic, aiming to enhance first- and last-mile connectivity and eventually achieve fully driverless operations. This initiative is part of WeRide's broader European growth strategy, following deployments in France, Switzerland, and Spain, highlighting Belgium's role as a hub for mobility innovation. Despite facing financial challenges and competitive pressures in the autonomous vehicle sector, WeRide continues to advance its technology and commercial offerings, including large-scale autonomous ride-hailing services and advanced driver-assistance systems. The project underscores WeRide's commitment to integrating autonomous vehicles into public transit networks and scaling its technology across diverse urban environments.
