Athens' Parthenon Scaffolding Removed First Time in 200 Years
For the first time in approximately 200 years, the Parthenon in Athens is free of scaffolding, providing visitors with an unobstructed view of this iconic ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. The scaffolding that covered the western facade, the most visible side from street level, was removed in late September 2025 after nearly two decades, allowing tourists to appreciate the monument's architectural details and historical grandeur. However, this is a temporary reprieve, as conservation work will resume in November with the installation of lighter, less intrusive scaffolding that aligns more aesthetically with the monument's design. The restoration efforts are expected to conclude by early summer 2026, after which the Parthenon will be fully freed from scaffolding, offering a lasting clear view. The site remains Greece's most popular tourist attraction, with about 4.5 million visitors in 2024, and to manage overtourism and protect the monument, the Greek government has implemented daily visitor caps and mandatory timed reservations. The Parthenon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, symbolizes democracy, art, and Western civilization, and its preservation continues to be a priority amid high tourist demand.
