Air Force Selects Davis-Monthan for 492nd Special Operations Wing Relocation

The Department of the Air Force has finalized plans to relocate the 492nd Special Operations Wing to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, a decision first announced in August 2023 and recently refined to enhance mission effectiveness, cost efficiency, and alignment with overall Air Force priorities. The relocation will include several units previously stationed at Hurlburt Field, Florida, and Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, such as the 20th Special Operations Squadron and its Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, as well as the 34th Special Operations Squadron. An environmental analysis required for the move is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025. Davis-Monthan AFB, recognized as a key strategic base supporting multiple combatant commanders, currently hosts various Air Force wings and other federal agencies, making it a critical hub for both active and reserve components. This consolidation aims to strengthen the operational capabilities of the 492nd Special Operations Wing within a base noted for its strategic importance and prior accolades.
