Trump Declares Canada Trade Talks Over
Canada–U.S. trade talks have stalled after an Ontario anti-tariff advertisement quoting Ronald Reagan angered President Donald Trump; Trump said he received an apology from Prime Minister Mark Carney but publicly declared negotiations over and refused to resume discussions while threatening additional tariffs. A narrow, bipartisan Senate resolution moved to roll back his emergency tariff declarations, signaling growing unease in Washington. Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told a Senate committee negotiators had made progress in the weeks before the pause and that Canadian officials continue communications with multiple U.S. agencies, even as channels remain strained. Prime Minister Carney met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit, called the encounter a possible turning point, accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China and is seeking new markets to offset damage U.S. tariffs are inflicting on farmers and fishers. U.S. officials, including Energy Secretary Chris Wright, say they hope to return to the table and deepen cooperation on oil, gas and critical minerals, but the president’s public stance has kept negotiations stalled and has hurt key sectors — steel, aluminum, autos, lumber and agriculture.
