Somerville Woman Attacked by Raccoon on Porch

Katharine VanBuskirk, a 69-year-old Somerville, Massachusetts resident, was attacked by a raccoon on her porch around 1 a.m. while letting her dogs out, just days after shoulder surgery. The raccoon bit and scratched her face, arms, and legs, forcing her to defend herself with one arm before escaping indoors to call 911. VanBuskirk was treated for rabies and given antibiotics, and her missing dog Ruby was found hiding inside the house. Experts stated that raccoon attacks on humans are rare but can occur if the animals are provoked or searching for food, possibly drawn by a compost bin. Despite the attack, VanBuskirk remains compassionate toward wildlife and encourages others to take precautions. She is expected to fully recover but will continue medication for some time.
