Tennessee Dismisses Ruby Whitehorn After Arrest

Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell announced Nov. 2 that senior guard Ruby Whitehorn has been dismissed from the Lady Vols to protect the program’s standards. The decision follows Whitehorn’s arrest late Oct. 30/early Oct. 31 on a misdemeanor charge of simple possession/casual exchange of marijuana (police said 5.59 grams), her second legal issue in three months. In August she was arrested on charges that included aggravated burglary and domestic assault; she later entered a judicial-diversion agreement, pleaded to misdemeanor charges and was reinstated in September. The dismissal comes days before Tennessee’s season opener against NC State; Whitehorn’s attorney has said she intends to plead not guilty in the possession case and she may have remaining collegiate eligibility. Whitehorn, a 6-foot transfer from Clemson who averaged 11.6 points and started 28 of 34 games last season, posted an apology on social media after the dismissal.
