NWSL Reveals Eight Clubs for 2026 Division II League
The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has formally applied to the U.S. Soccer Federation to launch a Division II league in 2026, beginning with eight teams affiliated with existing NWSL clubs: Bay FC, Kansas City Current, North Carolina Courage, NJ/NY Gotham FC, Orlando Pride, Racing Louisville, Seattle Reign, and Washington Spirit. All teams will play at their parent clubs' stadiums, and the league will require all Division I teams to have a second-tier affiliate within four years. The new league is designed to provide a developmental pathway for players transitioning from college to the professional level, and will also serve as a platform for coaches, referees, and front-office staff to gain experience. The league may eventually include unaffiliated teams. This initiative comes as WPSL Pro also announced plans for a second-division league, creating competition for players and resources. Overall, the NWSL's move is seen as a significant step for the growth and sustainability of women's soccer in the U.S.
