Malaysia Enforces Mandatory Speed Limiters On Heavy Vehicles From October
Malaysia will enforce mandatory use of Speed Limitation Devices (SLDs) on all commercial heavy vehicles starting October 1, 2025, as part of a phased rollout to enhance road safety. Initially, the requirement applies to tour and express buses, and heavy goods vehicles over 3,500 kg registered from January 1, 2015, with verification of activated SLDs required every two years from recognized manufacturers or accredited service providers. From January 1, 2026, enforcement extends to older vehicles with existing SLDs, and by July 1, 2026, all heavy vehicles not equipped with an SLD must install a JPJ-approved retrofit device, with penalties including license revocation for non-compliance. The devices will cap the speed limit for these vehicles at 90 km/h regardless of higher road limits, though drivers must still adhere to lower speed zones as applicable. This measure follows recent fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles and aims to reduce road fatalities and property damage by ensuring adherence to safe speed limits. Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized the importance of compliance and announced that a list of approved manufacturers and certification bodies will be published to facilitate implementation.
