World Athletics mandates 40% female representation on national boards by 2029

World Athletics has unveiled a comprehensive gender leadership strategy mandating that national track and field federation executive boards achieve at least 40% female representation by 2029, a significant increase from the current 20% minimum. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure women not only participate but also hold prominent decision-making roles in athletics governance. The strategy also targets increased female participation among referees and coaches, aiming for 40% female representation in referee exams and CECS Level 1 coaching certificates by 2027 and 2029, respectively, as well as specific targets for Level 2 coaches. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe emphasized the organization's commitment to equality, building on the milestone of achieving gender parity on its council in 2023. The roadmap includes phased interim goals and highlights sustainable change by growing the pipeline of female leaders across all levels of the sport. This approach positions athletics as a model for global equity and inclusion.
