Multiple US, Canada Fires Kill One, Displace Dozens

A string of residential fires across the U.S. and Canada this week destroyed or rendered multiple homes uninhabitable and displaced dozens of residents, including children, in Buffalo, Hempstead, Bridgeport, Hartford, New Bern, Troup, Sissonville, De Luz and Edmonton. At least one person died in Hartford and several others were treated or hospitalized — notably in Bridgeport — for smoke inhalation or non‑life‑threatening injuries. Fire departments mounted large multi‑unit responses (for example about 75 firefighters in Hempstead and second‑alarm or two‑alarm responses in Hartford and Edmonton) and brought most blazes under control. The American Red Cross is assisting displaced families in Bridgeport and Hempstead, Buffalo officials estimate about $150,000 in damage, and many scenes remain under investigation by local or state fire marshals and arson squads. Several incidents involved missing or injured pets (Troup, New Bern), while some scenes produced no injuries (Edmonton, De Luz).
