DC Plans $3.7 Billion RFK Stadium Deal for NFL Return
A major deal has been reached to bring the Washington Commanders back to the District with a new stadium at the RFK site, announced by Mayor Muriel Bowser, team owner Josh Harris, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The $3.7 billion project includes a $2.7 billion private investment from the Commanders for a 65,000-seat, roofed stadium, marking the largest private investment in D.C.'s history, with the city contributing around 24% of stadium and parking costs. Groundbreaking could begin as early as fall 2026, with the stadium targeted to open in 2030, and plans for extensive mixed-use development and thousands of new homes on the site. President Trump has publicly supported the deal. Approval from the D.C. Council is still required, and some council members have expressed concerns about the public cost and the city's ongoing budget challenges. The project is being promoted as an economic driver to revitalize the area and replace lost federal jobs.
