UK Government Plans Digital Driving Licences for 42 Million Motorists
The UK government is set to introduce a digital driving licence app later this year, which will allow over 40 million licence holders to carry their driving licence and ID digitally via the Gov.UK Wallet and App. This smartphone-based licence aims to simplify access to important documents such as driving licences and MOT expiry dates while also being recognized as a valid form of ID for activities like supermarket age verification. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander described the innovation as a 'game changer' that will make everyday interactions faster, easier, and more secure, empowering users and supporting public service improvements. Physical plastic licences will remain valid and continue to be issued, with the digital option being introduced initially as optional. The app will provide additional features including viewing driving records, endorsements, penalty points, and licence renewal, while employing encryption and two-factor authentication to enhance security and reduce forgery risks. Officials also estimate that this digital transition could yield savings of around £45 billion.
