Premier League to Remain at 20 Clubs, Says CEO

Premier League CEO Richard Masters has rejected speculation about reducing the league from 20 to 18 teams, despite growing concerns over fixture congestion and player burnout. Masters reaffirmed the Premier League's commitment to its 20-club, 380-match format, which has been in place since 1994. He criticized FIFA for not consulting adequately with stakeholders about new, expanded tournaments like the 32-team Club World Cup and the 48-team World Cup, both of which intensify the football calendar. Masters echoed the players' union FifPro’s concerns, noting the risks to player welfare and the possibility of strikes. While some European leagues have reduced their top-flight clubs, Masters insisted the Premier League would not follow suit. He called for improved dialogue between FIFA and affected parties to resolve ongoing scheduling issues.
