Santa Ana Man Arrested for Assaulting Woman Seeking Immigration Help

Jose Bernal, a 65-year-old man in Santa Ana, was arrested for allegedly posing as an immigration attorney and sexually assaulting a woman seeking help with her immigration status. Bernal demanded $14,000 for his services but offered a discount if the woman entered into a relationship with him; when she declined and tried to leave, he sexually assaulted her in his office. After the assault, Bernal allegedly offered her $400 and a discount to keep silent. Although Bernal claimed to be an attorney, records indicate he was disbarred years ago, and investigators believe he was likely impersonating a lawyer or paralegal. Bernal was recognized and apprehended after nearly a year on the run, thanks to tips from McDonald's employees in Tustin who saw his photo posted by police. Authorities are seeking additional victims and urge anyone with information to contact Detective M. Tapia at the Santa Ana Police Department.
