Heavy Rain, Floods Kill 30, Evacuate 80,000 in Beijing

Severe rainstorms in Beijing, China, have resulted in the deaths of 30 people, primarily in the Miyun and Yanqing districts, with extensive flooding and damage reported. The heavy rains, which peaked with up to 573.5 mm in Miyun, forced the evacuation of over 80,000 residents and caused significant disruptions, including damage to roads, power outages in 136 villages, and interruptions to transportation services. In response, Beijing authorities launched comprehensive disaster relief and rescue operations, with Chinese President Xi Jinping ordering all-out efforts to ensure the safety of affected residents, including prompt relocations. The central government allocated substantial disaster relief funds to support emergency rescue and recovery efforts across Beijing and other affected regions. The extreme weather, driven by warm and moist air from subtropical high pressure, overwhelmed local infrastructure and highlighted the challenges of managing sudden, intense rainfall in the capital's mountainous areas.
