Australia Bans YouTube, Social Media for Under-16s from December
Australia has expanded its groundbreaking social media ban for children under 16 to include YouTube, overturning an earlier exemption due to concerns over predatory algorithms targeting young users. The ban, effective December 10, also covers platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and X, preventing underage users from creating accounts while still allowing them to watch content on YouTube. Government officials, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Communications Minister Anika Wells, emphasized the ban's role in protecting children's wellbeing despite acknowledging it is not a perfect solution. YouTube's parent company, Google, has strongly opposed the classification, asserting that YouTube is a video-sharing platform rather than social media, and is considering legal action while continuing dialogue with Australian authorities. The move follows recommendations from Australia's eSafety Commissioner, who identified YouTube as a leading source of harmful content for children aged 10 to 15. This policy is closely watched globally, with countries like Norway and the UK exploring similar measures to safeguard children online.
