Trump Endorses Miyares, Urges Jones to Resign Over Violent Texts in Virginia AG Race
President Donald Trump has called for Democratic Virginia attorney general candidate Jay Jones to drop out of the race following the emergence of disturbing 2022 text messages in which Jones joked about hypothetically murdering Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his family. Trump condemned Jones as a "Radical Left Lunatic" and fully endorsed the incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, urging voters to continue supporting Miyares. Jones's texts compared Gilbert to dictators Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot and included violent fantasies, which sparked bipartisan outrage, including criticism from House Speaker Mike Johnson and Vice President J.D. Vance. Despite Jones's apology, Trump and other Republicans insist his comments are disqualifying and have pressured him to resign his campaign. While Trump strongly backs Miyares, he has not yet endorsed the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who has previously expressed reluctance to support Trump. The Virginia attorney general race remains a focal point ahead of the November 4 election, with Trump's endorsement signaling a significant political stance.
