Florida Gov. DeSantis Signs Brooke's Law Targeting Deepfake Sexual Content

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed four new bills in Jacksonville targeting sexual exploitation and deepfake crimes, including 'Brooke's Law,' named after Brooke Curry, daughter of former Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry. Brooke's Law requires social media platforms to establish a process to remove AI-generated sexually explicit deepfake images without consent within 48 hours, with noncompliance subject to penalties under the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. Brooke Curry, who experienced such an AI-altered image spreading on social media while she was a high school junior, emphasized the law's importance for accountability and dignity for victims. DeSantis criticized federal proposals restricting state AI regulations, asserting that states must retain authority to address emerging AI issues. Additionally, the governor signed bills increasing penalties for luring children, requiring convicted sexual predators to report in-state travel, and establishing mandatory minimum sentences for repeat sexual offenders. These measures collectively aim to enhance protections against sexual exploitation and improve legal responses to AI-driven abuses.
