Lindsey Oil Refinery Workers Rally Outside Parliament to Prevent Closure
Workers, trade unions, and local officials rallied outside the UK Parliament to urge the government to intervene and save Lindsey Oil Refinery in North Killingholme from closing after its owner, Prax Group, went into administration in June. Despite the Official Receiver deeming a sale of the refinery as a going concern unfeasible, Unite union representatives and local MPs continue to campaign for a full operational sale to preserve hundreds of jobs and prevent the site's assets from being sold off in parts. Unite's general secretary Sharon Graham criticized the government for lacking a plan to transition oil and gas workers into green jobs, while the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) pledged support through a "Training Guarantee" to help workers find employment in the clean energy sector. Workers shared concerns about job losses, financial hardships, and diminished opportunities for future generations if the refinery closes, emphasizing the site's critical role in the UK’s domestic fuel supply. Local politicians indicated interest from a potential buyer but could not disclose further details, and the union stressed the refinery is vital national infrastructure requiring decisive government action. The closure could directly affect around 450 employees, 500 contractors, and thousands more in the supply chain, marking a significant blow following the recent shutdown of another UK refinery.
