Chad Smith, the Hall of Fame drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, has launched the Curtis & Joan Smith Scholarship in partnership with the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. The scholarship, named in honor of his parents, aims to provide need-based financial support to an incoming freshman pursuing a career in music, beginning in 2026. Smith made a surprise appearance at the University's Band-O-Rama event, performing alongside the Michigan Marching Band, reinforcing his deep ties to his Michigan roots where he began his musical journey. The scholarship reflects Smith's commitment to expanding access to high-quality music education and career opportunities for aspiring musicians, continuing the mission of his newly founded Chad Smith Foundation.
