Netflix Begins Production on Australian Period Drama in South Australia

Netflix is producing a new series adaptation of Miles Franklin's 1901 novel My Brilliant Career, a coming-of-age story about Sybylla Melvyn, an ambitious young woman in 1890s rural Australia determined to pursue a career over traditional marriage. The period drama is being filmed at Adelaide Studios and various locations across South Australia with a $17 million budget, making it the largest TV series spend in the state. Philippa Northeast stars as Sybylla, alongside Christopher Chung as Harry, with a supporting cast including Anna Chancellor, Genevieve O’Reilly, and Kate Mulvany. The adaptation is developed and written by Liz Doran, who is also an executive producer along with Chloe Rickard and Alyssa McClelland, the latter also directing the first episodes. Netflix's Vice President of Content APAC, Minyoung Kim, highlighted the story's enduring relevance and praised the collaboration with Australia's creative talent. The series aims to introduce this iconic feminist Australian tale to a new generation while engaging a majority South Australian crew and showcasing the region's production capabilities.
