German Foreign Minister Meets Saudi,Qatar Officials on Middle East Stability

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul conducted a Middle East tour amid escalating tensions following Israeli attacks on Iranian territory and ensuing conflict in the region. Wadephul met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh and later with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, discussing regional stability, international developments, and the Gaza war. Both Saudi Arabia and Qatar condemned Israel's strikes as violations of international law, emphasizing the need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. Germany supports a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, although progress remains stalled due to opposition from key actors. Wadephul's itinerary was adjusted to focus on these urgent regional issues, cancelling planned visits to Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Israel. Meanwhile, Germany continues to navigate domestic concerns, including migration and border security within the EU, as highlighted by Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement.
