Laura Dahlmeier Dies in Pakistan Climbing Accident
Laura Dahlmeier, a German biathlon champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, died at age 31 after being struck by falling rocks while descending Laila Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains on July 28. The accident occurred at approximately 18,700 feet altitude, and her climbing partner, Marina Krauss, survived and alerted rescuers. Adverse weather and hazardous terrain prevented any recovery attempts. Dahlmeier's death was confirmed by her management, who emphasized her wish that no one risk their life to retrieve her body, a request supported by her family. Dahlmeier was celebrated for her historic achievements at the 2018 Winter Olympics and her many World Championship and World Cup medals. The sporting community mourned her loss, remembering her as an inspiring athlete and role model.
