Inmate Shoots Prisoner Injuring Leg During Mount Vernon Transport
On October 16, five prisoners were being transported from the Mount Vernon Police Department to the Westchester County Jail when a single gunshot was heard inside the police van. Upon returning to the Mount Vernon Police Department, officers found one prisoner with a minor gunshot wound to the leg, who was then hospitalized. A firearm was recovered from the scene, and another prisoner has been detained as a person of interest in the shooting. The Westchester County District Attorney's Office is collaborating with the Mount Vernon Police and conducting an independent review through its Public and Law Enforcement Integrity Bureau. The Mount Vernon Police Department has stated that a full review of the incident and departmental policies will be conducted. Details remain limited as the investigation is ongoing.
