Shared Positive Emotions Lower Stress Hormone in Older Couples Across Canada Germany
A series of studies published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology demonstrate that older couples who share positive emotions such as happiness, joy, and relaxation experience significantly lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is linked to better health outcomes. Researchers led by psychologist Tomiko Yoneda at the University of California, Davis, analyzed data from 321 couples aged 56 to 89 across Canada and Germany, collecting nearly 24,000 saliva samples and emotional self-reports over one week. The findings reveal that cortisol levels drop notably when both partners simultaneously feel positive emotions, even when controlling for factors like age, gender, medication, and time of day. Importantly, these shared positive emotional experiences not only reduce stress in the moment but also have lasting effects, helping to keep cortisol levels lower throughout the day. This research builds on positivity resonance theory, highlighting the unique power of co-experienced joy and connection in promoting physical health among older adults. The studies underscore the potential health benefits of fostering positive emotional interactions within close relationships, with implications for broader social connections beyond romantic partners.
