Russia Plans Separate Drone Military Branch Amid Ukraine Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the creation of a new separate branch of the military specializing in unmanned systems, or drone forces, as part of the country's state armament program. Putin emphasized that drones have played a crucial role in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, with Russian drone operators responsible for up to 50% of destroyed and damaged enemy equipment and facilities, including armored vehicles, communication hubs, and transport. The new Unmanned Systems Troops are intended to be rapidly developed and deployed, with a focus on personnel training, production, and supply of modern aircraft to enhance Russia's combat capabilities. This move follows significant losses to Russia's bomber fleet caused by Ukrainian drone strikes, which have inflicted billions of dollars in damage. Putin also highlighted the importance of developing a comprehensive air defense system and stressed that Russia is not lagging behind in drone technology, drawing on accumulated experience in unmanned warfare. The formation of this drone force was initially announced in December 2024, with a target for establishment by the third quarter of 2025.
