Former NBA Player Jason Collins Undergoes Brain Tumor Treatment
Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay player and current league ambassador, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and is undergoing treatment. Collins, who played 13 seasons in the NBA from 2001 to 2014 with teams including the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, is widely recognized for coming out as gay in 2013, making history as the first active male athlete in one of the major North American professional sports leagues to do so. He chose to wear jersey number 98 to honor Matthew Shepard, a young man who was murdered in a hate crime due to his sexual orientation. The NBA and Collins' family have requested privacy and support as he focuses on his health, with the league expressing solidarity and calling on fans to send positive thoughts. Collins recently married longtime partner Brunson Green, a Hollywood producer, earlier this year. His courageous public coming out and career have been inspirational to many in the LGBTQ community and sports world alike.
