Music Engagement Linked to Reduced Dementia Risk in Older Adults
A study involving over 10,800 adults aged 70 and older found that regularly listening to music is linked to a 39% reduced risk of developing dementia, while playing a musical instrument is associated with a 35% reduction. Engaging in both activities was correlated with a 33% decreased risk of dementia and better overall cognitive performance, including improved episodic memory. These findings suggest that music-related activities could serve as an accessible and enjoyable lifestyle strategy to help maintain cognitive health and potentially delay the onset of dementia in older adults. The research, conducted by Monash University and published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, used data from the ASPREE study and its ALSOP sub-study to overcome limitations of previous smaller studies. While causation cannot be definitively established, the study highlights the potential of music engagement to stimulate brain regions important for memory, emotion, and attention. Given the lack of a cure for dementia, identifying such preventive strategies is critical as populations age globally.
