Mets Overhaul Coaching Staff After 2025 Collapse
The New York Mets missed the postseason after a dramatic late-season collapse, sliding from an MLB-best 45-24 on June 12 to a 38-55 finish and ending 83-79 despite one of baseball’s highest payrolls and the marquee signing of Juan Soto. President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said manager Carlos Mendoza will return but announced a sweeping coaching overhaul. The club parted ways with pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes, third-base/infield coach Mike Sarbaugh and bench coach John Gibbons, and longtime catching coach Glenn Sherlock retired. The team retained first-base coach Antoan Richardson, strategy coach Danny Barnes and hitting assistant Rafael Fernandez, while assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel and bullpen coach José Rosado were granted permission to speak with other clubs. Stearns cited late-season pitching and defensive breakdowns as primary causes of the collapse and said he will lead the search for replacements. With roster uncertainties looming — including Pete Alonso’s impending free agency and closer Edwin Díaz’s reported opt-out — the Mets enter an uncertain offseason focused on reshaping Mendoza’s staff and addressing pitching and defensive holes.
