Letitia James endorses Adrienne Adams for NYC mayor
New York State Attorney General Letitia James endorsed City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams for mayor, pledging to campaign for her in Black churches to counter frontrunner Andrew Cuomo’s influence among those congregations. Adams also secured the coveted endorsement of District Council 37, the city’s largest municipal workers’ union, which praised her track record on workers’ rights and her character as a leader. These endorsements aim to boost Adams’ momentum after a slow campaign start and position her as a strong alternative to Cuomo, who has received support from several other major unions and leads in the polls. James and Adams criticized Cuomo’s outreach to Black voters, arguing he has misrepresented his record and failed to support Black communities adequately during the pandemic. The endorsements were celebrated at a rally, with union leaders vowing to mobilize their membership on Adams’ behalf. The Democratic primary, featuring ranked-choice voting, is set for June 24, with the winner facing Republican Curtis Sliwa and other independents in November.
