ASEAN Summit Highlights Regional Peace, Economic Growth Under Malaysia's Chairmanship

Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the importance of dialogue over force in conflict resolution during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting, citing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia as a model for resolving crises in Gaza and Ukraine. At the 47th ASEAN Summit, Malaysia, under Anwar's 2025 chairmanship, showcased ASEAN's role as a central and neutral platform for regional diplomacy, highlighted by the signing of significant economic agreements with both the United States and China, and the formal admission of Timor-Leste to ASEAN. Anwar defended the warm welcome given to US President Donald Trump at the summit amidst criticism, underscoring Malaysia's balanced approach by also engaging with other global leaders including those from Brazil and South Africa. ASEAN's ongoing efforts under Malaysia's stewardship aim to maintain peace, economic stability, and regional cooperation through initiatives like the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, and broader international partnerships. Despite challenges such as global tensions preventing a joint East Asia Summit statement, Anwar reaffirmed ASEAN's commitment to peace and economic growth, emphasizing the bloc's status as one of the world's most peaceful and fastest-growing economic regions. The prime minister also stressed the importance of expanding ASEAN's relations beyond traditional partners to regions like Latin America and Africa to foster deeper trade and investment ties.
