Chancellor Backs £28.6m Cornwall Tin Mine Reopening Creating 1,300 Jobs
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a £28.6 million investment from the National Wealth Fund to Cornish Metals to reopen the South Crofty tin mine, which is expected to create up to 1,300 jobs and boost Cornwall's economy. The mine's reopening will directly create over 300 jobs and an estimated 1,000 additional positions through local supply chains, supporting the UK's domestic tin supply vital for solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and semiconductors. Reeves emphasized that Cornwall has been neglected by previous governments and highlighted the government's commitment to unlocking growth and putting more money into the pockets of Cornish people. Alongside the mine visit, Reeves is promoting plans to reduce bureaucracy for local pubs, clubs, restaurants, and cafes by allowing more outdoor dining and longer opening hours. Don Turvey, CEO of Cornish Metals, called the government investment a powerful vote of confidence in Cornwall's mining future. Reeves also visited other Cornish businesses, including a ship repair company, a fish and chip shop, and a heat pump manufacturer, underscoring broad government support for the region's economic renewal.
