NYC Adopts $116B Budget Expanding Library, Regulating E-Bikes, Boosting Childcare, Immigration Services
New York City Mayor Eric Adams and the City Council have reached a deal on a $115.9 billion budget for fiscal year 2026, which includes significant investments in public services and new regulatory measures. The budget allocates $32.7 million to keep ten public libraries open seven days a week, reversing previous cuts to Sunday service and marking a rare expansion of library hours. It also establishes a new Department of Sustainable Delivery within the Department of Transportation with $6.1 million in funding and 60 staff positions to regulate e-bikes, including implementing a 15 mph speed limit to improve safety. Additional priorities include over $70 million for immigration legal services, providing free legal assistance to migrants facing deportation and supporting unaccompanied minors in removal hearings. The budget also dedicates $10 million to a universal childcare pilot program aimed at low-income families with children under two. These measures reflect the city’s focus on enhancing safety, supporting immigrant communities, expanding educational resources, and addressing childcare needs amid a record-breaking budget agreement.
