'Rust' Opens in Theaters After Three-Year Delay Following On-Set Tragedy
More than three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on the set of 'Rust,' the Alec Baldwin Western has been released in limited theaters and on demand. The 2021 on-set shooting, which also injured director Joel Souza, led to investigations and several trials, resulting in prison time for the film's armorer and probation for the assistant director, while charges against Baldwin were dismissed after evidence was withheld by prosecutors. Production of the movie resumed with the consent of Hutchins' husband, who became an executive producer as part of a settlement, and profits from the film will benefit Hutchins' family rather than the original producers. Director Souza and cinematographer Bianca Cline completed the film, aiming to honor Hutchins' work and vision. The decision to finish and release 'Rust' was controversial but ultimately intended as a tribute to Hutchins and a benefit for her family. The film premiered at a festival in Poland to a full audience and is now accessible in select theaters and via streaming services.
