Kansas City Man Charged in Sports Reporter Killing

Ruslan Huseynov, a 34-year-old Kansas City man, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the January 10, 2025, road rage shooting death of Dennis Sharkey Jr., a sports reporter for the Platte County Citizen. The incident occurred on Interstate 29, where witnesses reported Huseynov allegedly exited his vehicle with a gun and shot into Sharkey's car before fleeing. Sharkey was found with a gunshot wound in his crashed vehicle and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Investigators used cellphone data, witness statements, surveillance footage, and ballistics tests to identify Huseynov and match a firearm from his home to the shooting. Huseynov is being held without bond, and police believe the shooting was a random act of road rage. The local community and Sharkey's colleagues have expressed shock and grief over the incident.
